[EDITORIAL] THE MBAKA IN ALL OF US!-By Dr. Chidi Eze
I was not active online throughout the weekend as I was very busy: it turned out to be a weekend of “Men of God”. Fr. Mbaka and his bazaar clip starring His Excellency Peter Obi and others then Bishop Oyedepo and his Jubril Al-Sudani video based on an article in “The Nation newspaper”.
Am still struggling to come to terms why the hysteria on the Mbaka video or is it because this time, it involves a Vice-presidential candidate or is it because it was recorded? Let’s record bazaars, launchings and all the money raising activities in different churches and splash same, you will be amazed.
So many Pastors, Ministry owners, Priests, Bishops, etc has been threatening, cajoling & extorting money from us since 19 kpiridiiim, Haba.
Let’s not play the ostrich here.
If there is a baby dedication or thanksgiving in a church; suddenly the launching for new church building or parsonage is sharpaly fixed considering the number of latest automobile parked outside, it gets even worse when siren-blaring dignitaries anchors the event.
This pattern is the same in almost all denominations, the difference is the packaging and style of driving the money.
That is not to say there are not exceptions, I know so many wonderful priest of God.
For the rest of us, who want good governance, quality basic amenities of life yet we queue up at the gate of every politician from councilor, LGA Chairman, HOA members, HOR members, Senators, Governors, Minister, to collect stipends and turn around to shout these politicians are criminals and are not doing well, you are an mbaka amongst us.
Christmas is in 3weeks time and it’s election time too so the “mbaka” in all of us will be at work expecting Christmas gift: bags of rice, turkey, chicken etc.
Whereas I condemn in entirety the threatening of politicians in any way to dole out our common wealth be it in secret or openly that action is a product of our warped ideology of making money at all cost.
Priesthood especially of the orthodox order is a highly revered and regarded vocation but who are those called in this era; they are still products of this our current warped society whose opinions and idiosyncrasies are seriously influenced by the society they come from and live in.
What we need is a total reset to default of our mindset starting from the smallest unit of the society the family to the communities, from the altars to the pews, in all schools and unless we do this; the mbakas in us will continue to haunt us today, tomorrow until we do the needful.
