Sepp Blatter has resigned as president of FIFA in the midst of the corruption scandal besetting football’s governing body.
Blatter said he stood for re-election last week because “I was convinced it was the best option”.
He was duly re-elected but says “this mandate does not seem to be supported” by other parts of the football world.
At an extraordinary press conference, Sepp Blatter has announced that he is resigning as president of FIFA.
Sepp Blatter: “I will organise extraordinary congress for a replacement for me as president. I will not stand, I am now free from the constraints of an election.
“I will be in a position to focus on profound reforms. For many years we have called for reforms but these are not sufficient.”
